Patents
Patent type, complexity, office actions, priority, and examination route change the schedule.
Budget filing, translation, prosecution, grant, annual fees, recordals, and possible disputes separately.
Current statutory terms are 20 years for inventions, 10 for utility models, and 15 for designs, calculated from filing.
Paying every fee is not portfolio strategy; connect each right to products and business value.

Contact UsA useful timeline starts with route and patent type. Direct, Paris, and PCT cases reach China with different documents and priority histories. Invention applications include publication and substantive examination; utility model and design applications mainly receive preliminary examination. Technical complexity, formal defects, office-action rounds, applicant response time, and expedited options can all change the result.
Plan around business events such as disclosure, funding, production freeze, launch, customs activity, or enforcement, then update the forecast when CNIPA issues each notice.
The first filing estimate is only one part of lifecycle cost. A realistic budget separates official fees, drafting or adaptation, Chinese translation, drawings, priority documents, agency work, office-action responses, grant formalities, annual fees, assignments or licence recordals, evidence, and possible invalidation or litigation.
Avoid publishing a static fee table inside internal policy. Official fees and exchange rates change, and professional cost depends on claim count, document length, technical field, and response complexity. Use a dated estimate tied to a defined scope.
Record the earliest priority date, Chinese filing or national-phase date, publication, examination request, every response deadline, grant, annual-fee due dates, and term. The responsible entity, local agent, internal owner, and invoice contact should be visible in the same system.
Corporate changes create risk when deadlines still route to former employees or old subsidiaries. Update names, addresses, ownership, agency appointments, and billing contacts promptly.
After grant, confirm the final claims or design views against current products, correct bibliographic data, preserve the prosecution record, and decide where the patent will be used. Enforcement may require further validity analysis, evidence preparation, or an evaluation report depending on the right and forum.
Licences, pledges, assignments, standards activity, and customs or platform programs may require additional documentation. A certificate stored without an operating plan is an underused asset.
At least annually, link each patent to products, revenue, defensive value, licensing potential, competitor activity, remaining term, and family strategy. Maintain rights that support a reasoned objective; consider abandoning low-value rights deliberately rather than by missed deadline. Document the decision, especially where co-owners, licensees, investors, or transaction covenants are involved.
